Characteristics of Gas Bearings

Author:

Extremely low friction
Because the gas viscosity is much lower than the liquid, the air viscosity at room temperature is only one fifth of that of No. 10 mechanical oil, and the friction of the bearing is proportional to the viscosity, so the friction of the gas bearing is lower than that of the liquid lubricated bearing.

Wide range of application speed
Gas bearings have low friction and low temperature rise. When the speed is up to 50,000 rpm, the temperature rise of gas bearings does not exceed 20-30 C, and the speed even reaches 1.3 million rpm. Gas hydrostatic bearings can also be used at very low or even zero speeds.

Wide temperature range
Gas can remain gaseous in a great temperature range, and its viscosity is little affected by temperature (when the temperature rises, the viscosity increases slightly, such as temperature rises from 20 to 100, air viscosity increases by 23%). Therefore, the applicable temperature range of gas bearing can reach - 265 to 1650.

Lower carrying capacity
The bearing capacity of hydrodynamic bearings is proportional to the viscosity. The bearing capacity of gas hydrodynamic bearings is only a few thousandths of that of liquid hydrodynamic bearings of the same size. Because of the compressibility of gas, the bearing capacity of aerodynamic bearings is limited, and the load on the projection area can only be added to 0.36 MPa.

High accuracy requirement
In order to improve the bearing capacity and film stiffness of gas bearings, bearing clearance smaller than that of liquid lubricated bearings (less than 0.015 mm) is usually adopted, and the accuracy of parts should be improved accordingly.
